Home batteries in Sydney, including adding one to your existing solar

Most Sydney homes with solar can add a battery, either alongside your current inverter or by switching to a hybrid one. We install Tesla Powerwall 3 (as a Tesla Certified Installer), Sungrow and SigEnergy, plus GoodWe, AlphaESS, Solax and Fox ESS. The federal discount is currently around 30% of a typical battery's price and steps down on 1 January 2027.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar?

Can I add a battery to my existing solar?

Usually, yes. There are two ways. An AC-coupled battery sits alongside the inverter you already have, so nothing working gets thrown out. A hybrid setup swaps your old inverter for one that runs both panels and battery, which is often the better choice if your inverter is old. We check your system first and tell you straight.

What does “backup” actually cover?

What does “backup” actually cover?

This is the question most people wish they'd asked. Some batteries back up a couple of essential circuits; others can run the whole house. How much runs at once is limited by the inverter's power (kW), not just the battery's size (kWh). Gas hot water and gas cooktops also need power to start. Your quote says in writing exactly what stays on in a blackout.

How long will a 10 kWh battery last?

How long will a 10 kWh battery last?

Overnight for a typical Sydney home with the fridge, lights, TV and some appliances. Heavy loads like ducted air-conditioning, pool pumps and EV charging drain it much faster. We size it from your bill so it covers your evening use.

Is a battery worth it in Sydney?

Is a battery worth it in Sydney?

It depends on how much power you use at night and which electricity plan you're on. With the federal discount, many homes now see a reasonable payback. We'll show you the numbers for your home rather than a generic promise.

Why do battery quotes vary so much?

Why do battery quotes vary so much?

People regularly get quotes thousands of dollars apart for what looks like the same job. The difference is usually the brand, the inverter size, how much of the home is backed up, switchboard work, and what's left off the quote. Here's what should be on any battery quote, including ours:

  • ✓The exact battery brand and model, and a promise that's what gets installed
  • ✓Usable capacity in kWh (not just 'total')
  • ✓Inverter power in kW (this limits what runs in a blackout)
  • ✓Exactly what stays on in a blackout: whole home or which circuits
  • ✓The federal discount shown as its own line
  • ✓Any switchboard work, itemised
  • ✓Who installs it, and whether monitoring app access is handed over to you
  • ✓Warranty terms for the battery and the workmanship

How much does a home battery cost in Sydney?

+

It depends on the size and brand you choose and whether you already have solar. The federal discount takes around 30% off a typical battery. Your quote shows every item, with the discount as its own line.

How much is the federal battery discount?

+

Around $272 per kWh of usable capacity for the first 14 kWh until 31 December 2026, then around $228 per kWh from 1 January 2027. It keeps stepping down every six months until 2030. It's taken off the price at install.

Do I have to join a virtual power plant?

+

No. The battery must be capable of joining one to get the federal discount, but joining is your choice. In NSW there's a separate incentive if you do join, and it stacks with the federal discount.

Are you a Tesla Certified Installer?

+

Yes. MF Energy is a Tesla Certified Installer for Powerwall and Tesla home charging equipment in Australia.
